parking & directions
Because of the geography of Staithes there is no room for parking in the old village, and visitors cars need to be parked at the top of the hill, in the newer part of the village, necessitating a short but steep walk down the hill to Brooklyn.
Turning off the A174 into Staithes, you will follow Staithes Lane until you reach the Captain Cook Inn, where the road sweeps round to the right into the public car park, where charges are currently £5 a day from Easter until the end of October.
If at this point you bear left, however and continue until shortly before the top of the steep hill leading to the old village, you will find Glen Vale car park, up a driveway between houses on your right, and recommended as being safer and closer to Brooklyn than the public car park. Charges here are £4.50 per night (24 hours) and it is advisable to book a place in advance; you can ring the owners on 01947 840590, and they will be pleased to send you a brochure.
On leaving the car park, descend the steep hill until you come to the first houses of the old village; just past the first two houses on the right you should see the sign 'Browns Terrace' above a green garage door. The entrance to the terrace is to the left of this garage door and you should see the sign for Brooklyn, a few doors along on the right. Cars can be brought down to unload luggage at the end of the terrace if necessary.
Walkers (usually from the Cleveland Way) should walk up the High Street, away from the sea, until a few houses past the Emporium gift shop you will come to some steps going up on the left. At the top of these steps is Browns Terrace, where you turn right and follow it until you reach Brooklyn.
